Soper then came back to his hometown and started working as a journalist for The Southland Times. Due to his good communication skills, he got good recognition in the field of journalism and soon got good offers from renowned newspapers and magazines. He went on to work with top media organizations like Otago Daily Times, Walkato Times and others.

However, it was his stint at the Parliamentary press gallery that brought him good name and fame in the media industry. He joined APN in 1980 and later moved to ZB and stayed for a long time. He recently quit parliamentary press gallery in 2022.

He was also part of Waikato Times and Otago Daily Times for few years in that period.
